Mission complete! 🍾 Bringing together wine journalists from around the world, our 2024 Wines on a Mission tour put sustainability in the spotlight at California’s pioneering wine estates.

From Sonoma to Santa Cruz Mountains, and Lodi to Livermore Valley, there was much to discover, including AI-powered tractors, exciting alternative grape varieties and legendary vineyards.

Thank you to the winemakers, vintners, and all the fantastic folks of #CaliforniaWines for making this trip one to remember! Special shoutout to wine writer and educator @hawk_wakawaka for her expert insights.

Toasting five years of @forbeswomenpolska with #CaliforniaWines! 🥂 From insightful discussions to wine tasting with honoured guests, the fifth anniversary event at Warsaw's POLIN Museum was a night to remember.

The milestone event brought together over 300 guests, including US Ambassador Marek Brzeziński, and featured accolades for influential women like Dr. Henryka Bochniarz and Professor Małgorzata Fuszara. California Wine Institute’s own Honore Comfort, VP of International Marketing joined virtually to raise a glass "live from the vineyard”.

🍷 Last but not least, the celebrations concluded with a tasting journey across California's top regions and estates, perfectly complemented by classic American fare.

A taste of post-modern California 🍷 Winemakers across Golden State are shaking things up with under-the-radar grape varieties and different winemaking methods, creating a whirlwind of surprising styles to discover.

💡 Think zippy skin-contact Chenin Blanc from Santa Barbara by @kuninwines, an unusual blend of Piedmontese grapes from Mendocino County by @ruthlewski, or @paxwines seriously complex Sonoma Syrah.

This lineup was originally put together for 'The New California' masterclass at Swedish sommelier academy @vinkallan last year, led by wine writer and journalist @andersmellden.

Leading the charge towards a greener future 🌱🍷 @gloriaferrer and @langetwins were honoured with California Green Medals at the 10th Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards for their planet-first practices.

🍾 @gloriaferrer, winner of the Environment category, is one of Carneros' top sparkling wine producers. Managing all 330 acres of its estate vineyards with regenerative organic practices, it employs innovative methods like biodiverse cover crops and high-intensity sheep grazing to improve soil health and minimise impact on the natural environment.

🍷 @langetwins, founded by twins Brad and Randall Lange in Lodi, won the Leader award for its dedication to the “three Es" of sustainability: environmentally sound practices, social equity, and economic viability. With a sustainability ethos ingrained since the 1970s, it leads by example with initiatives like habitat restoration and energy-efficient design.

For more than 30 years, Cathy Corison has been creating top-level Cabernet Sauvignon wines from premier benchland vineyards in St. Helena, renowned for their gravelly loam soils. This special soil composition retains enough moisture for spring growth while ensuring excellent drainage for concentrated fruit.

The result? 🍷 Deeply-coloured and well-balanced wines, moderate in alcohol and with a kaleidoscope of flavours, that have helped put Napa Valley on the global fine wine map.

That means if you’re sipping something from the Golden State, chances are that it was made with the Earth in mind.

Digging for terroir! 🍇 On the “extreme” Sonoma Coast, @flowerswinery delves into the geology and soil diversity of its Sea View Ridge block with the help of geologist and terroir specialist @brennaquigley.

“Below the surface at Sea View Ridge lies a mosaic of soils shaping the distinct character of each block, and our approach to farming and winemaking,” says Flowers.

Sea View Ridge is home to rugged and rocky Pinot Noir blocks, flanked by the Pacific Ocean. Flowers farm this wild site using organic and biodynamic practices, yielding vibrant and mineral Pinot, shaped by the elements.

Wine of the Week! 🍷🥀 Old vines are known for creating expressive, complex wines that tell the story of their origin, and this Old Vine Zinfandel from @boglevineyards is no exception…

Made from head-trained vines of 60-80 years of age, grown in the old-vine hotspots of Lodi and Amador County, this Zinfandel is matured for about seven months in American oak barrels. The result is an incredibly intense yet balanced red, layered with notes of raspberries, cranberries, and blackberries, hints of tobacco leaf and cedar.

@divinesweden shares their verdict and offers a pairing suggestion:

"A highly versatile wine from sunny California, perfect for almost any occasion. Try it with pizza, sirloin steak, lamb sausage stew, peppercorn steaks, or game (elk, deer, and reindeer), preferably accompanied by sweet sides. It also complements nutty hard cheeses or blue cheese with nuts in honey."

Gnarly treasures 🍇 California wine country is home to protected pockets of venerable old vines, from Santa Maria Valley to Santa Cruz Mountains, which yield some of the state's most distinctive and nuanced wines.

One prime example is the @ridgevineyards Buchignani Ranch Carignane block in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley AVA. Established back in 1927, with more vines planted in the 1940s and 1950s, this spot is a living testament to California's rich winemaking heritage.

In the decidedly Mediterranean climate of this part of Sonoma, bringing wet and cool winters followed by hot, dry summers, these old vines produce Ridge’s 100% Carignane wine. With a finely-built structure, refreshing acidity and ageing potential, it makes the case for Carignane as a fine wine.

Another ProWein adventure for #CaliforniaWines 🍾 It was three bustling days of tasting, meetings, and more tasting at the 2024 edition of ProWein – the wine world’s biggest trade show, which drew a crowd of 47,000 industry professionals to Düsseldorf.

Our ever-popular California Barn hosted 75 exhibitors, representing 130 wineries and over 300 wine brands. Dedicated to sustainability, our Wines on a Mission self-pour exhibit attracted 750 visitors, and over 1,000 hungry #winetrade enjoyed lunch at our Californian Burger Truck!

California's vibrant presence didn't go unnoticed in Meininger's International, a leading drinks industry publication: "California had a big presence in Hall 14 and Joan Kautz of @ironstonevineyards, another long-time ProWein exhibitor, spoke for others when she said she was very happy with the meetings she had."

California’s finest in Gdansk 🍷🇵🇱 Last month, wine lovers in Gdansk had the opportunity to discover the dazzling diversity of wines from the Golden State at a #CaliforniaWines tasting event led by @adamsomms.

The star-studded wine lineup featured structured Cabernet Sauvignons courtesy of @wente and @louismmartiniwinery, Confident Zinfandel from Lodi, vibrant Central Coast Pinot Noir from @ednavalleyvineyard, expressive @blackstallionwinery Napa Chardonnay, and a skin-contact white wine by @ruthlewski.

"After the Paris Tasting, I asked myself, why did I come to America? For freedom and possibly to have my little winery…” 🍷 Miljenko ‘Mike’ Grgich of @grgichhills, a true #CaliforniaWine legend, known for crafting the winning California Chardonnay in the 1976 Paris Tasting, passed away last December at the remarkable age of 100 years old.

Born in the village of Desne on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, the legendary winemaker came to Napa Valley in 1958 with a small suitcase and big ambitions. After honing his skills at renowned estates such as @chmontelena, @bvwines, and @robertmondavi, he realised his dream of founding a winery in the heart of Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA.

Over his decades as a winemaker, Mike Grgich undoubtedly helped shape the Napa Valley, and California, as a world-leading wine region. He developed several winemaking techniques still used today, including cold sterilisation, and spearheaded the research into the roots of California Zinfandel, eventually tracing it back to his native Croatia!

From grape to glass 🍇 @threestickswines is a family-owned Sonoma producer, known for its 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and no less than six “grand cru” level vineyards.

Founded in 2002, the Three Sticks label takes its moniker from the childhood nickname of the proprietor Bill Price III, who has raised it from a friends-and-family affair to the world-renowned wine estate it is today.
